hacker -- A computer wizard (often self-taught) who can discover the "guarded" secrets of a computer system (or network). The few hackers that have caused harm and damage to computer systems have given hackers a bad public image. However, "hacker" is still an exalted title.
help room -- A chat or conference room offering assistance to users.
hexidecimal color code -- Combination of letters and numbers used by computer machine languge to describe and display colors. For example: Black is 000000 and white is ffffff.
history -- A window or file containing all or most of the URLs visited in a Web session.
hit -- A single request from a Web browser for a single item from a Web server; used to measure a Web site's load on its server.
hit counter -- A script on a Web server that registers a visit (or downloaded file) to a Web page and may display the running total number of "hits." (Bee advised: Hit counters are not always accurate and, in some cases, totals can be manipulated.)
home page -- The "welcome page" or "entry page" of a Web site. The first page of a Web site. See also portal page.
honey -- The Bees' buzzzword for "money."
hoshin -- A core bee-lief; an intellectual pole star or reference point.
host -- A computer that services others. A designated facilitator of a chat room.
hot chat -- Online flirtation, usually in a private chat room.
HotJava -- A dynamic Web browser developed by Sun Microsystems that uses Sun's Java programming language. HotJava can execute "applets" or programs written in Java that can be included in HTML documents.
HREF link -- See anchor or hypertext link.
HTML -- Acronym for HyperText Markup Language, the programming system used to create Web pages. Web pages are based on ASCII text files. Within those files sets of tags or "codes" define what each part of the document should contain. For instance, a tag might reference a picture file, so a browser reading the file will insert the appropriate picture at the defined position. A subset of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). See SGML.
HTML tag -- The tag "set" that makes up a complete HTML markup command. For example: In <B>The Beeline</B>, the <B></B> is the cookie.
HTTP -- Acronym for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the protocol used by Web servers to communicate with Web clients. See client and server.
Hypertext -- Any text that contains a hyperlink to another document. See HTML and hypertext link.
hypertext link -- A string of text characters usually distinguished by underlining and/or highlighting that, when clicked on, takes the user to another section of the Web page, a new new page or another Web site. Hypertext links are added using the HTML tag <A HREF></A>. See anchor.
