daemon -- A Unix program that carries out certain system-management tasks in the "background"; that is, users don't usually know it's even running. A Web server is a type of daemon -- it sits around waiting for a Web browser to ask it for information.
data -- Information.
database -- A collection of information, stored, and organized for easy searching.
Datapac -- A packet-switching network operated by Bell Canada that provides local access numbers.
delete -- To remove information from electronic existence.
demoware -- Abbreviated term for DEMOstration softWARE, a usually full-featured version of commercial software with the exception that the Save and / or Print features are disabled. See shareware.
dial-in direct account -- An Internet account using SLIP, CSLIP, or PPP. Dialing into a service provider's computer using modems connected to the computers. Once connected, the computers communicate using the TCP / IP protocol.
dial-in terminal account -- An Internet account using basic serial communications.
digerati -- The digital version of "literati," a reference to those who are knowledgeable about the digital revolution.
digital -- Binary information that is represented by two discrete states: 1 or 0.
digital signature -- A way for a certifying agency to sign a type of security certificate.
disk cache -- A part of a computer's disk space set aside for storing / processing information.
division -- A significant section of a long HTML document, such as an appendix or glossary, and designated in HTML 3.0 by the <DIV CLASS=name> element.
document -- An HTML file containing text that appears in a Web browser as a page of information. An information file.
document information -- An onscreen window that displays general information, such as location and security status, about the Web page.
domain name -- A textual alias for an IP address based on the domain name system. Components of a domain name are separated by a period (called "dot"). For example: The IP address 206.106.118.16 can have the alias www.bton.com.
domain name server -- A computer that keeps track of addresses in a given organization or domain and routes requests to specific addresses.
domain name service or system -- A way of distributing information worldwide across the Internet so that no one computer, person, or organization has to keep track of everyone in the world. Computers are assigned standard types of names depending on their domain, and domain name servers share information about their specific area with other computers. Computers in educational institutions are given names ending with the suffix .edu, government offices have the .gov suffix, commercial sites end in .com, and so on.
doorway page -- Highly focused Web pages on specific topics, services, or products. They are used to improve search engine results and increase traffic to the Web site.
dot -- The period symbol (.) used to separate characters in a URL.
download -- To transfer information from a remote computer to a local computer.
download count -- The number of times a file has been downloaded.
DNS -- Acronym for Domain Name Server, Domain Name Service, or Domain Name System. See domain name server and domain name service or system.
DRAM -- Acronym for Dynamic Random Access Memory.
