Web Definitions

C

cache -- A place that a Web browser stores Web documents that have been retrieved. The cache may be on the hard disk or in memory (or both). Documents you "return to" can be retrieved from the cache, saving transmission time.
carbon copy (cc) -- To send an e-mail message to additional addresses.
category -- The divisions of information within a section of The Beeline. See section and topic.
CCL -- Acronym for Communication Control Language, a script that allows control of the modem.
cell -- The subunit of an HTML table. Another term for "frame."
CERN -- The European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN) in Switzerland, where the World Wide Web was created by Tim Berners-Lee.
certificate -- Document issued that attests that the owners of the key to a Web page has authenticated their identity.
certificate of authority -- An issurer of security certificates used in Secured Socket Layer (SSL) connections. See security certificate and SSL.
certificate information -- Information on a Web page that tells you about a page's origin as well as other vital information (such as security status).
CGI -- Acronym for Common Gateway Interface, a standard interface between a Web server and an external "gateway" program such as a Web browser; a program that handles a request for information and returns information or performs a search or other routine.
cgi-bin -- Traditional name of a directory on a Web server where CGI programs are stored. ("bin" is an abbreviation for "binary" because these programs were called "binaries"). See CGI.
character styles -- HTML tags used to add emphasis to specific words. For example: <B></B> for bold text.
chat -- To engage in real-time communication with other users.
chat blinders -- A way of blocking a user's chat from the view of a chat or conference room window.
chat room -- An online area where users may meet to communicate and interact with others. There are two types of chat rooms -- public and private.
CIS -- Acronym for CompuServe Information Service, an online service provider.
clickable image -- See imagemap.
clickthrough -- When a reader clicks on a link (like a banner ad) to leave the Web site and go to another.
client -- A computer that requests information from another. An early term for a Web browser. See browser.
client pull -- A way of creating dynamic documents in which data on a Web server are reloaded after a specified amount of time by "pulling" the data from the server to the browser.
client-side imagemap -- An imagemap that processes mouse clicks and accesses URLs on the user's own computer. See imagemap.
close box -- The small box found in the upper-left corner of an onscreen window that, when clicked on, closes the window.
cobweb site -- A Web site that has not been updated for a substantial time period or has great amounts of outdated content.
co-location -- Refers to a server that belongs to one person or group physically located on an Internet-connected network belonging to another person or group.
Command key -- A special function key found usually to the left of the spacebar on an Apple keyboard. See Option key and Open-Apple key.
common ground -- Portable document software that enables a user to save a file as read only and to enable any number of users to view the file with the free reader utility software.
compression -- A scheme that makes files smaller in size.
conference room -- A specific kind of chat room found in forums.
continuous document streaming -- Data that are sent to a computer's screen display in stages.
cookie -- A piece of information sent by a Web server to a Web browser that expects the browser to save and send back to the server whenever the browser makes additional requests from the server. Cookies may contain information such as login or registration information, "shopping cart" information, user perferences, etc.
CPA -- Acronym for cost per action (as in sign ups, filled-out forms, online purchases, clickthroughs, etc.).
CPC -- Acronym for cost per clickthrough (as in when a reader clicks on a banner ad).
CPM -- Acronym for clicks per thousand impressions (as in banner ad views).
.CPT -- The filename extension for a CompactPro document.
crawler -- See robot and search engine.
CSLIP -- Compressed SLIP, a communications protocol for dial-in direct connections. See SLIP.
CSS -- Acronym for Cascading Style Sheets, used to create Web pages.
CUC -- Acronym for Currently Under Construction, the condition of an unfinished Web page.
CUC page -- A Web page that tells the user a link is temporarily offline or not available.
CWIS -- Acronym for Campus-Wide Information Systems, an online system that provides information on terminals spread around a campus.
cyberpunk -- A body of speculative, fictional literature focusing on people living in technologically enhanced cultures. A Netizen who cruises the Internet with alacrity.
Cyberspace -- The Internet and World Wide Web (coined by William Gibson in his novel "Neuromancer").
