Through the ages, children have mimicked the play and music of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. After the muffled drums of war had ceased, children all over played with home-made drumsticks, drums, fifes and whistles. Even war-weary men, hungry for hearth and home, turned to making music. During the Revolutionary and Civil Wars in America, drummers and fifers were attached to each company of men. These musicians were usually between the ages of 12 and 16. They provided music in camp and on the march. They also conveyed battle commands to the soldiers. "I don't think we can have a war without music." -- Robert E. Lee From the simple beating of two sticks together to fashioning a homemade drum, the playing of percussion instruments has almost always accompanied the rich American folk music tradition. When the settlers arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the rhythmic patterns from their native homelands. |
